OUTing the Past Conference - Completing the Past

  • Queens University Belfast University Rd Belfast BT7 1NN Northern Ireland (map)

Convened annually since 2015, the OUTing the Past Conference Gathering takes place this year on 9th, 10th and 11th September and will be hosted online via Zoom. Since its inception, the conference gathering has maintained a commitment to examining the subjects and methodologies that are part of LGBT+ history. It furthers the goals of OUTing the Past by providing a forum for productive and sustained engagements among its participants. Understanding that communities are creating and curating LGBT+ histories now, the conference gathering welcomes scholars from a range of academic disciplines, public scholars, students, librarians, archivists, activists, artists, and heritage professionals.

The theme for the 2020 OUTing the Past Conference Gathering is Completing the Past: LGBT+ History and Creative Production.

Hannah Tiernan will deliver her paper ‘Foul, Filthy, Stinking Muck’: The LGBT Theatre of Project Arts Centre 1966 to 2000 as part of this year’s conference. Her research catalogues the LGBT theatre of the Arts Centre, reflecting upon how the documented works responded to social issues of the time. It also interrogates how these historical works have influenced contemporary theatre practice. Finally, it considers the role of Project Arts Centre as an artist-led organisation at the forefront of presenting and producing cutting edge work within the context of LGBTQ activism.
